freakonomy

I see him whenever I go to Mr. Shah’s office. He recognizes me and stands up to salute. I casually asked Mr. Shah whether he worked in the next door office.
Mr. Shah smiled at me. “Have you ever met someone who does not know the time or place of his birth?”
“In modern times?” I wondered.
“Have you ever heard of a man who has never had a regular job in his entire life?”
Chandu looks 50 and claims to be. But people who have witnessed his living correct me and add at least another 15 years. Jet black hair, youthful and energetic disposition corroborate the claims.
Born to the quiet fishing village of Vazira, he now stays with his brothers, who allegedly, have wrested ownership of his ancestral house. But provide him food and a corner to sleep.
He has never travelled beyond a few kilometers and has never had a regular job in his entire lifetime.
He runs errands for all around Mr. Shah’s office and in return gets food, tea, and money for his habitual paan.
No other requirement.
Free economy or Freakonomy?
